Alcohol Awareness Week began with the well-attended “Save Tri-Varsity Debate” in Eden Grove Red on Monday 18 February. While no resolution was reached, the University has promised to hold a follow-up meeting two weeks before the upcoming Tri-Varsity at Fort Hare, much to the disappointment of students who expected this year’s event to be held at Rhodes.

The racist video emerging from the University of the Free State (UFS) last week has been a big wake up call for people across the country: racism is still an issue and it still accompanies gross human rights violations. As students we have been taught to question everything that we have been told is a truth. We should, therefore, question the notion that we are receiving an unbiased education. Can we really expect a lecturer to keep their own beliefs from being put forward in a lecture? I have recently heard students debate whether or not university education is pro-communism. Bottled water, anyone? Emma Richards and Peta Daniel investigate the quality of Grahamstown’s water.
It has become a familiar scenario: people complain that the Grahamstown water smells bad, tastes worse and is brown in colour. Some experience interruptions in water flow. Others refuse to drink it at all, claiming that they have been told that the water contains high levels of heavy metals and faeces, and that their friends have fallen ill.
