Vice-Chancellor Saleem Badat left Grahamstown on May 2 for an eighteen day trip to Johannesburg, London, Stockholm and Oslo. Much of the trip involves courtesy calls on important donors who contribute to funds and scholarships at Rhodes. Badat will also be speaking to prospective donors, and may, if the opportunity arises, solicit funds for the long-delayed upgrade of the Rhodes library. Some of his other appointments include an Alumni reunion and a meeting with Rhodes students studying at Oxford University. At present the Rhodes VC makes one trip to the United States and one trip to the United Kingdom every year. These meetings are considered an essential part of building the university’s image, according to Rhodes Development Manager Lin Andrew. Badat’s trip to the United States at the end of April was his first such trip since taking office. He will be back at work on May 22.
