The Sports Personality Gala Evening, one of the more formal sporting highlights of the year, took place on Friday August 31. The well supported event honoured the sports men and women who are the most dedicated and enthusiatsic personalities.

Members of the different clubs are nominated by fellow club members and the finalists chosen by a panel of judges made up of Rhodes staff and members of the Grahamstown community. This year there were 50 nominees and the 20 finalists were selected from interviews done prior to the evening. Mr and Miss Sports Personality and the runners up were announced at the award ceremony.
2007’s winners in the women’s category: second runner up: Phillippa Francis (Tennis), first runner up: Jax Stephenson (Hockey) and Miss Sports Personality: Natasha Ruscheinski (Aquatics). Men’s category: second runner up: Dave Elliot (Rugby), first runner up: Clive Eley (Hockey) and Mr Sports Personality: Thabo Limema (Tae Kwondo).
Aziez Madatt closed the award ceremony saying that while Rhodes’ clubs may not always come first on the sports field, it is the sports men and women that make it special. Heather Surridge, sports secretary and coorganiser, said the evening was a great success with all the sports admin staff helping to make the evening run smoothly.
