Saturday 17 May was an important day for Super 14 rugby fans. The Sharks and the Stormers each secured bonus points in their matches against the Chiefs and Lions respectively. The Stormers were the first South African team to get a place in the semi-finals, only to be knocked out by the Sharks. The Sharks won their match 47-25.
Neither team had cemented their place in the semis before the weekend, and there was a lot riding on how they performed in their matches. The bad news for the South African teams was that, on Friday, the Hurricanes were able to secure a bonus point in their match against the Blues. The Blues won 19-17. Another problem was the Waratahs’ victory, as a Reds’ victory would have been better for the Sharks and the Stormers.
At the end of the weekend the Crusaders were sitting at the top of the log on 52 points, with the Waratahs second with 43, Sharks third with 42 and the Hurricanes fourth with 41 points. The Stormers also have 41 points but they are separated from the Hurricanes by point’s difference.
