World watch: Assissination attempt fails

By Kyle Robinson

The United States secret service has foiled an attempted assassination of Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama. Raymond Hunter Geisel, who was found in the possession of weapons and military gear, has been charged with threatening to assassinate the Senator.

According to a secret service affidavit, Geisel was making threats during a training class for bail bondsmen in late July. He reportedly said, “If he [Obama] gets elected, I’ll assassinate him myself.”

When the secret service searched Geisel’s 4×4 vehicle and hotel room, they found a 9mm handgun, ammunition, including armour-piercing bullets, knives, body armour, military-style fatigues and a machete.

In a written statement to the secret service, Geisel denied that he had made any threats on the life of the Senator, and said that he had never taken steps to carry out the assassination.

Geiser claimed that the handgun was meant only for training, as part of the bail bondsmen class, the knives were for protection, and the machete to cut brush at his home in Maine. He also said that he suffered from psychiatric problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder, although he failed to say whether he had been treated.

Geisel was eventually charged only for threatening Obama, and given a five year prison sentence.
