On Tuesday 16 September, the Faculty of Humanities held its first Afrikaans seminar. It was entitled “’n Kykie in die werkswinkel van die biograaf” and was hosted by world renowned biographical author, Professor John C. Kannemeyer. Kannemeyer spoke to students and lecturers about the construction of biographies and about his own personal work as a researcher.Kannemeyer has written more than 40 books on a range of topics and spoke at length about the literary works of Etienne Leroux and Langenhoven. He went on to explain that in order write a good biography, you must immerse yourself in the subject and try to become emotionally involved with the subject. Dean of Humanities, Professor Fred Hendricks opened the event, saying it was the first time he had spoken Afrikaans in public. Hendricks said that since Rhodes has a multi-lingual policy, it is important for Afrikaans to have room in our society. He further hinted at the idea of having a seminar in isiXhosa in the near future – another first for Rhodes.
