Orientation week has always been a fun and relaxing time in which first years get a chance to familiarise themselves with the University grounds. Millions of viewers watch The Amazing Race on television as competitors race around the world for a million dollars. Rhodes University has its own version during O-Week every year. Students participate in teams of five and get to take part in their very own ‘amazing race’ around campus. These teams are put to the ultimate test as they have to work together to stay ahead of the rest. “The Amazing Race is challenging and exciting,” said Vigil Prins who was one of the competitors in 2008. Teams race around campus and through town, hunting down check points where various fun tasks are completed in order to accumulate points. Teams stand in line to win great prizes, rangingfrom food vouchers to free driving lessons. The award ceremony takes place during the famous O-Week street party.
