The award was started last year by the Dean of Students, Dr Vivian de Klerk, who wished to acknowledge those student leaders who have enriched the quality of life on campus through extraordinary extramural contributions or achievements. This month seven students were the first ever recipients.
To be ellible for the DoS Leadership Award means not being the average Joe. According to De Klerk, students have to have served “exceptionally well” for at least one year in no less than three different leadership positions.
A committee was set up to decide on the awards. De Klerk said the committee did not base their decision on students simply getting a leadership position, but instead they focused on “how students performed after getting that leadership position”.
The 2008 recipients are Richard Barnett, Malcolm Freeman, Fatema Morbi, Mohammed Tayub, Marcel Jakubec, Tafadzwa Mlambo, Leigh Crymble. By Kate Douglas
