Oppidans shine at sports awards

It is called the law of cause and effect. 31 Rhodes University club representatives sat in suspense on Friday 10 October for the Rhodes annual sports awards evening, which took place at sports admin. Hardworking and talented Oppidan sports representative, Malcolm Freeman, walked away with inter–res men, women, and spirit awards for the oppidans. Zane Plescia, Athletics Chairman, also walked away with Club of the Year and Committee of the Year Award. Archery club had a prosperous year with Geraldine Simak, the Archery club chairperson for 2008, winning the Administrator of the Year award. “It was a complete surprise, but a pleasant one. It’s nice to know that somebody out there notices your hard work and extra effort,” said Simak. “We had a great year and I am honoured that we were finalists for committee and club of the year,” Simak added. Neillen Locke tasted victory for the archers by winning the best coach award. The Hockey Club won themselves the Most improved club award. The Sportsman of the Year award went to Sandimampita Razafimbola from the Basketball club. This club also walked away with Best Performance award for 2008. Marli Vlok shot the rifle, winning herself a Best Sportswoman award this year.
